Why are energy bills going up this winter?
Wholesale gas prices rose because of the conflict in the Middle East. Ofgem says wholesale prices climbed 11% in three months. Gas bills under the cap are rising 8%, while electricity stays broadly flat thanks to a VAT cut.
Evidence
Homes without gas see an increase of less than 1%, according to Ofgem. Some analysts forecast a further rise of 12–14% in January 2027 — that's a forecast, not a confirmed figure.
