Why does the price cap look lower when prices went up?
In July 2026, Ofgem lowered its "typical household" usage figures because homes now use about 7% less electricity and 17% less gas. The headline cap is calculated on that typical use. On the old figures, the October cap would read £1,935, not £1,723.
Evidence
Ofgem explains the change to its Typical Domestic Consumption Values in its October 2026 announcement. Because of this, the unit rates on your bill matter more than the headline cap figure.
